The Fed's turn, in context

After holding rates in restrictive territory for much of the cycle, the Federal Reserve's communication has shifted: inflation risk and employment-cooling risk are now described as balanced, the door to cuts is open, and futures markets assign growing probability to a first move before year-end. A dollar that stops offering growing carry loses its main tailwind.

What the market already prices

It pays to separate the event from its pricing: much of the pivot is already in EUR/USD, which has recovered ground from the cycle lows. The additional move will depend on the surprise — whether inflation and employment data accelerate the cutting calendar, or whether the ECB matches with its own easing and neutralises the differential. Trading consensus already in the price is chasing the bus.

The EUR/USD technical map

The underlying structure is bullish while the pair holds the 1.1000-1.1050 zone, which concentrates horizontal support and the long-term average. Above, intermediate resistance at 1.1350-1.1400 is the toll before the psychological target of 1.1500, the top of the multi-year range. Losing 1.0950 would invalidate the scenario and send the pair back into the prior mid-range.

In momentum terms, orderly advances with shallow pullbacks are consistent with accumulation; a violent weekly rejection candle at resistance would be the first serious sign of exhaustion.

The quarter's catalysts

  • US inflation prints: every reading redraws the cutting calendar.
  • Employment reports: an abrupt cooling would hurry the Fed; a gradual one gives it room.
  • ECB meetings: if Frankfurt cuts at the same pace, the differential does not move — and neither does the pair.
  • Geopolitical risk: risk-off episodes tend to favour the dollar short-term, even inside greenback downtrends.

Trading it with a cool head

In data-heavy weeks, EUR/USD can travel in minutes what it normally travels in days. The usual rules apply with extra force: positions sized by distance to the stop, not by conviction; stops beyond the immediate noise; and particular care with leverage around releases — news slippage is the norm, not the exception.
